Alternatives to Zoom for Video Meetings for your Organization

The explosion of video meetings over the last few weeks has raised questions about the security and privacy of video conferencing services. Zoom seems to have attracted the most attention from users and the media, and with this has come a lot of attention from those looking to capitalize on security and privacy vulnerabilities of video meetings.

Zoom has said they are addressing security and privacy concerns (click here to read about Zoom’s response) but with all the uncertainty around Zoom, it’s a great time to look at some other options.

You will find a lot of platforms offering all the features you’d need for a virtual meeting including screen sharing, conference calling, video conferencing, mobile conferencing, meeting recording and transcription. Here are a few of our favourites that are backed by companies with good reputations and long track records. All options below are available on PC, Apple, Android and iOS and have free options/trials or are part of subscriptions you might already pay for.

Cisco Webex

Cisco Webex has a solid reputation, the backing of an industry leader and options for free and low-cost monthly plans. You can View their plans here. They’re currently offering upgraded free plans, first month free when you sign up for a paid monthly plan and four months free when purchasing an annual plan.

GoToMeeting

GoToMeeting has been around since 2004 and is part of the LogMeIn group of companies that also features LastPass, GoToMyPC, join.me and more. They’ve recently posted about meeting security, click here to read their blog post from April 2.

Skype/Microsoft Teams

If you’re already a Microsoft Office 365 subscriber this might be the perfect time to explore some of the new features Microsoft is rolling out. Skype for Business is being transitioned to Microsoft Teams which offers a multitude of features for sharing files, video calls, video meetings, chat and more. Microsoft Teams also allow you to meet with people outside of your organization and people who don’t have Microsoft accounts. Here are a few resources to help:
